foragers and cage accessories:
why are foragers important?
In the wild they would spend lots of time searching and getting there food. This means they have developed very good problem solving skills and are very capable of defeating many obstacles to get there dinner. Our domesticated rats are not that different from there wild counterparts in this. Studies have shown that lab rats offered the choice of easily accessible food and food they have to work for will actively seek out the harder to get food.

why are cage fillers important?
Providing space for burrowing, running, and climbing is essential to ensure proper enrichment for pet rats. One segment of the enclosure should feature a minimum of 8 inches of bedding, spacious enough to comfortably accommodate every rat in the enclosure. This allows them to indulge in their natural burrowing instincts, promoting mental stimulation and physical activity. Remember, these animals are both a burrowing and a climbing species! They need both to thrive.
The bottom tray of the enclosure should be layered with at least 2-4 inches of bedding to ensure comfort and cleanliness. To facilitate climbing and movement, the higher levels of the enclosure should be equipped with ropes, hammocks, hanging foraging toys, and branches. These additions not only encourage physical exercise but also provide opportunities for exploration and mental engagement.

veggies and fruits
Not all fruit and veg is equally good for our rats, in fact it is as easy to cause problems by feeding too much starchy veg or sugary fruit as it is over feeding treats. As such its important to get a nice balance of the different types of fresh fruit and veg available. A good rule of thumb is to feed along the following ratios;
- 50% leafy veg (10-15% of which can be herbs)
- 20% colourful veg
- 10% legumes
- 10% others
- 10% fruit (avoid citrus for boys, berries in particular should be a regular feature here)
This can be fed as a chopped up mix all in one go, or you can alternate what you feed across different nights of the week. If you only have a small group of rats a great way of doing this is to get a load of veg and chop up into single freezer bags with a nice balanced mix in. Aim for each freezer bag to contain 1 potion and you can feed straight from the freezer, breaking up the mix a little before putting in the cage. This helps preserve the vitamins and minerals as well as keeping things fresh.
